The Publishers Association calls for tighter AI detection and takedown as pirated audiobooks spread

The Publishers Association (PA) has reported “increasingly seeing instances of AI narration being used in relation to members’ audiobooks without permission”, following a report in the New York Times that pirated audiobooks are spreading on YouTube.

Recently, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) partnered with AI licensing and protection platform Vermillio to help publishers identify and remove infringing copies of books online. On this partnership, Newton said: “We commend AAP’s efforts to address this rising problem and look forward to seeing how these new tools can enhance the broader industry’s push to ensure platforms take responsibility at source.” Spotify has been contacted for comment.
